Korea and Hong Kong Cluster Deployments

CANDIS staff have just returned from building out some redundant clusters in Korea and Hong Kong for a foreign Banking client. The whole process took 4 days, for 2 locations, 2 cities and 4 clusters. CANDIS is glad that we were able to help our clients manage the deployment with native language support and avoiding expensive travel for EU/US based engineers.

All up it was 70 servers deployed with full remote management and power and network port control.

Images can be seen over at: Cross posted to the CANDIS Group Blog.

7 Days, 4 Countries, 4 Cities, 4 Clusters and Useless AusTrade

Just got back from a busy week of doing stuff in this boiler room of the world we call Asia. Installed 4 clusters for some clients in Korea and HK and then made it to a tech and trade conference in Dong Guan, southern China.

Most of it went well until we got to the AusTrade pimped trade show. I will just copy and paste the email that I sent to my cousin (Mitch Fifield) who is a federal Senator in Australia. A few of us are also going to be writing to Aus Trade directly as well. In a nutshell – more proof of how useless most government funded initiatives are and how it is just a waste of tax dollars.

China Fears and Lazy Westerners…

Tiananmen Fireworks and CCTV broadcast delay

Watching the celebrations on the TV tonight and I noticed that the sound out the window was in perfect sync with the fireworks explosions on the TV.

So here is the challenge. I live near Ci Yuan Si. What is the CCTV broadcast delay then?

Tools available for use, google earth, calculator, brain.

China Internet Cut Off

Well it is getting worse.

Is it the fact that the APCN-2 cable was severed in Taiwan again from the typhoon/earthquake?

Is it China Telecom with poor BGP? (Confirmed from our provider)

Is it the October 1st anniversary coming up?

Is it another batch of Edison Chen nude starlet photos doing the rounds?

iPhone in China September 1st 2009?

I went into my local China Mobile Shop and the accompanying China Unicom shop (next door) yesterday to get the wife a new phone. Seeing as my monthly bill would pay for three contracts out right – we might as well get something back out of it – as opposed to just a Gold VIP Card that only works in select airport lounges around China and god forbid if you are on a flight later than 8PM and want a free coffee or cold drink or foot bath….

But I digress. I thought that my 4 Year old Nokia E61 could do with an upgrade. I have coveted an iPhone for a while but held off due to price (out of principle a phone does not deserve that much money) and for lack of a keyboard.

Xinjiang, China Internet Block to last until October 1st 2009, Face Book and Twitter?

According to the local media in China, things flared up 2 days ago again. So while internet restrictions were about to be lifted the current official line is October 1st – China National Day – is when the blocks will be lifted.

Right now there is no internet service in all of Xinjiang. This is confirmed by my relatives there. Of course we don’t know if GPRS or CDMA data access is blocked. People can always use a modem to and dial up to a POP in another city – but the point isn’t about stopping people like myself, that in 1999 unwired their hotel room phone jack in order to hook up a modem and dial out.

Taking Andy Ihnatko around MY Beijing

Been a busy week for visiting tech celebs here in Beijing!

First Kevin Rose and his tea tour group and now Andy Ihnatko. Well it was a long day (especially with a not yet quite right broken ankle on the mend) but well worth it to be able to both meet Andy, give him the insiders tour and satisfy any man’s most basic, bestial and testosterone fuelled primal desires of the flesh………..look at rows of knock off iPhones (and ipones and ifawns) and help bargain them down to the lowest price!

Tweetup Beijing with Kevin Rose, Tim Ferriss and Glenn Mcelhose

Awesome night. Feeling a bit seedy now as I get ready for my 11am – however met a bunch of cool people that share this city with me and of course Kevin, Tim and Glenn. Like most tech meet ups in China, Australians tend to be over represented – though I hope we were well behaved.

I kept telling Kevin that I was trying hard not to blow smoke up his rear, but he really is a down to earth, friendly and an interesting guy. He has a real passion for tech (and tea) and the experiences that we could show him of our beloved Beijing. Of course with more time and more notice you can really roll out the red carpet.

Flickr Blocked in China Too!

There goes the flickr image servers as well. The fall out from Xinjiang continues.

Flickr works still for chat and forums – but no images.
