Facebook blocked in China.
This time it is not even the “Connection Reset” usual suspect. Nothing is happening so I am guessing DNS poisoning.
Going to run some tests from different servers across China in different cities and different networks and also do some DNS zone queries to see what is up. 20 mins and counting…….
UPDATE: Can confirm that Shanghai and Nanjing also not working. Also not a “Connection Reset” error so this is not happening due to the automated and distributed filter system. This must be happening at the international gateway as packets are just being dropped as opposed to having TCP connection resets inserted into the streams.
30 mins and counting…

I’m in Shenzhen and its not working here either. wtf is going on.
Xinjiang. It is pretty bad there now. The local media and BBS’s has some pretty shocking video coming through. I guess the authorities are trying to stop things spiralling out of control. Easy to happen when a lot of poorly educated people get wind of misinformation and lack the capability to correctly vette, test or verify the information….and otherwise just “fly off the handle”…
I’m in Hangzhou and I haven’t been able to access facebook the whole day. I had to use a proxy server. Will this be permanent like youtube? I hope not!
I could get on during the day today – no problem… last I tried was at about 6:30pm… then a mate tweeted me at 7:28pm saying he just lost connection. He is in BJ too.
Maybe they are escalating the blockage based on regional area or risk factors based on local education levels or ethnic ratio’s?
I’m in Wenzhou. No Facebook!! :-[ keep me updated please!! It’s my only window home!
I could survive without facebook.. twitter is what I need.
You should try and use friend feed and link facebook in and you can get some content that way. Though it can get complicated with all these social media networks linked and inter linked… it hurts my head and I am only in my 30′s. I guess I am too old for this stuff now. :-s
In Xiamen not working too!!
Hope this is a mistake and China will unblock it soon
In Guangzhou and tried to log onto f/book at 8.30pm tonight and just now, 9.22pm. No joy.
I’ve been without in Hangzhou for a few hours. I hate being so dependent on my internet site, but like someone else said it’s my only window home most of the time.
I’m in Ningbo (3h south from Shanghai) and it was ok at 7pm.. then, after dinner, around 8pm stopped working.. and i thought that twitter’d be the last website blocked… and now what??? MSN and Skype???
In it is Xi’an blocked too. 7. july 2009, 10 p.m.
this is the beginning of the end guys. keep close to the airport
I’ve got a whole other family in Xinjiang too – they are freaked out. They are about 2 hours north of Urumqi and are mostly Han. Word has come through that other towns are now flaring up now too. Need to see if it is possible fly the babies and mothers back here to Beijing so the family can be together. My house is all on edge right now. The missus is going crazy with the mobile in one hand, and qq and other bbs’ and blogs in the other hand – coordinating info and news from among friends and family across the province and country.
Nor is it working in Kunming (capital of Yunnan province). A friend of mine uses a proxy to access facebook, though. But for some reason it doesn’t work for me.
In Shunde… no facebook either … please please please put it back on..
Not working in Wuxi as well. Oh boy, what a day
In Wuhan facebook is not working either…
In Shanghai and it’s officially not working. I hope they will unblock it soon!!!!
I cant access facebook either,
This better not be permanent. In Guangzhou.
anyone know of any good downloadable proxy servers?
ahhhhhhhh…my life is over

i need facebooooooook
im from canada dammit.
yeaaa report from wuhan.
Hi,
FB is not working in Shanghai since last night. I also have problems to google “FB in China” or acces some forums about FB. Guess it´s cuz of Urumuqi, but how long is it going to be like this?
Hello All,
this morning, in Beijing it also didn’t works………
I am in shenzhen, I have to cross the border..it seems to be working in Hong Kong… hoping they will lift the ban soon since those riots.. I even googled the block.. back in 2007 and 2008 around july they blocked it also… hopefully it is lifted soon~
damn thts my communicaxn window. cnt access it too since yestersday in jiujiang
try accessing through ########
EDIT: Sorry to cut the address of the proxy out – but I don’t want to ruin it for others by bringing attention to it…..Richard.
I’m in Changchun, Jilin Province and I can confirm that facebook is out of service here too.
Although it’s probably just wishful thinking, let us hope that this is only a temporary block.
In Ningbo, not working since 7 July. It should be back before the end of the year… unless another face-loosing-episode in the China history book is added before that.
*&^%$#
Owes!!!!!! WTF is going on!!!
this is my only connection to my mates back in S.A.!!! wat’s going on, when the hell are we gonna get our facebook back?!?!?
If anyone knows where Roger Sebastian Todd (Canadian) is in China, please get him to call home, something has happened and we need the to get hold of him quickly. He was chatting with everybody on Facebook but his account has been dormant for a week or so.
Phones don’t exist anymore?
I’ve lost contact with a lot of friends. Close family, of course, I still have contact with through email and phone, but I’d developed a lot of friendships from Facebook. Being a foreigner in China makes it a little difficult to make friends sometimes.
Hopefully China gets this sorted out quickly. I also hope it gets sorted out properly. I’ve just talked to a few Chinese friends about what the disputes are about, and although it’s way out of control… well, that’s all I’m going to say.
Anyways, I’ll be going home soon, so I’ll be FBing it up as soon as I return to my jolly old home.
Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter blocked in Hong Kong. (Using Powercom.com.hk ISP)
For real? Can you confirm in a few other places or ISP’s or another PC/LAPTOP in your LAN to make sure it is not just a you problem?
richard,
I tried another apartment using the same ISP in the building and it’s still down. Facebook was up for a while during the day.
I can’t try another ISP but I doubt the whole of Hong Kong is blocked. Some HK friends were still active on Facebook when I managed to get on.
I could get thru to Facebook with a proxy randomly chosen by proxy.org.
Facebook was up for a few hours then down again. I tried another apartment with the same ISP and things were down. Then later in the night Facebook and Twitter were available in the other apartment. So I went home and reset the modem and router and now everything is back again.
Poor can you confirm now that facebook is working? since In beijing now and it is not working…. Where are you Poor?
I’m in Shanghai & facebook is still not working. Really pissing me off to be honest.
China is so great! China is great! China is great! China is Great!!
(catch the sarcasm…) and hail to the EXPO next year! (you know what i mean)
I am chinese and this is also pissing me off.
I’m done with sarcasm.
China is not great. China is a big playpen for 1.3 billion children. Children who have been taught to always do as they are told. And if they don’t do this, it CLEARLY means that they are bad Chinese, and don’t love the ‘motherland’.
Well…. to be honest, although all this pisses me off immensely, I am also happy on a daily basis that I am not Chinese.
And in theory, I can leave whenever I want.
If I were Chinese, I would be ashamed.
And I would do something about it.
Yup – not much fun….I hope this is all done with by the end of the month…. or failing that – the end of the year? :-s
Then again – there are bigger problems in life. Maybe we should all do some real social networking – like in person – with others – outside – away from the computer?
No Facebook, No Flickr, No Twitter…. big deal!!!! Are you so dependent on the computer for info or staying in touch. What do you expect from China. Their country! Their rules!
Dudes, so much bitching and no action. Instead of waiting or wasting energy on things I cannot change I have full access and control of all the above mentioned sites which I I use within China. Took me a bit of google searching and the links to the information had to be accessed using a proxy, but now I have as normal connection using what seems to be a well kept secret. I’m not going to spoil it but the information id all there. I have a large expat friend list and not one of them has posted since it went down.
I think DNS poisoning might be on the right track. But really I don’t know about such things.
When I do a nslookup from my machine for http://www.facebook.com I get:
202.106.1.2 and 202.181.7.85
The site http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php gives me:
69.63.184.142
Similar results for Youtube and Twitter. I wonder if this is DNS poisoning or just location based load balancing.
Facebook, Youtube and Twitter all seem to go down at the same time. They’ve been up and down for the past week.
As previously mentioned I am in Hong Kong.
Could be CDN or Global Load Balancing stuff for sure.. you’d really need a clean “reference” sample from before to compare to now to see if there is DNS poisoning going on….
well Elmer Fudd, maybe you would be so good as to let me know how you achieved this… as the normal methods don’t seem to be working for me.
joe_briscoe@hotmail.com
Much appreciated sir.
Joey – send me an email at rford @ utilitycomputing.com.cn – I don’t want to publish stuff here and then ruin it for others by bringing attention to the service/trick/option/angle….
Facebook still blocked by Big Bejing Brother.
When will it end?
Keep treating the people like this and it will end in tears.
Same problem in Hangzhou.Using a macbook.

http://www.utilitycomputing.com.cn/?p=306
There are ways to go around, it’s slower but it works
Yes, you can get it through by using proxy, i use http://freeonlineproxy.info
china sucks!
Uh – huh..
Any kind of rationale to go with that well thought out and convincing argument?
i used unblockbook.net.. but now it is banned or blocked…anyone know any other good proxies?
That’s why I don’t like to mention them online – as then they get attention drawn to them and they get nixed. It is the same strategy from back in the dormitories at uni when the college wanted to charge students for the LAN because the university was now charging the college. People would find proxies at various research schools but would not share because then the secret would be out from loose lips or the proxy admin would notice a big spike in traffic….. “Tragedy of the Commons”
I am using both Tor and Freeonlineproxy to access Facebook, and that works fine. One thing that does not work at all, anywhere, is Pet Society, it keeps saying to update my Flash Player and enable Java, but it already is, and I am also running the latest version.
Does anyone know how to get over this problem? Is it impossible to run Flash based pages like that using Tor etc?
Thanks
yea… same here in Beijing and Jilin… I used a proxy from unblockbook.net for a while, but that is now blocked for me also…. not good.
yeah Richard I guess you are right… *sigh* i need to find other proxies I guess…the unblock one was great, I could even play the app games on facebook…
Guess i’ll just wait…for get a vpn 0_o~
Has hotmail been blocked in China (especially Shanghai) the past few weeks?????
Not that I know of. It works fine here – well I can load the front page – I don’t have an account to actually log into to see…
Lilly hotmail hasn’t been blocked in beijing or in shenzhen. Maybe it was the internet at your place…i will be in shanghai in 2 days i’ll check it out.
I don’t know what’s causing it but the DNS entries keep getting clobbered. Sometimes a ipconfig /flushdns fixes it, or rest of the router/modem. But for example here twitter and facebook have the same IP address:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\system32>ipconfig /flushdns
Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

does anyone know a proxy that lets you write on facebook? I been getting proxies but I cannot write anything on facebook, I can only read stuff.
email me bangpaulxu@gmail.com
thanks
Try using the existing ones with SSL if they allow it – that will encapsulate the traffic. Also I have found that firefox works better than safari or IE with some of these web based proxies….. I am so over facebook now – just needed a reason to dump it. Long live twitter!
i heard twitter was just attacked by some hacker… ok richard i guess i will try…the SSL
Facebook is still banned in china?anyone know good proxies to access it? if yes pls mail to me at veilveeru@yahoo.com
Nothing works – not even the proxies! :-s
I feel like I have something to say too!…I miss my friends very much and since they are in different time zone..msn isnt really the connection…
I really had enough of this..why do they have to block facebook??
Yup it’s true, proxy websites no longer work. I’ve shifted to using ##### and it works really well in bypassing the great firewall of China, it gets me to access blocked social networking websites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, etc.
EDIT: I commented out the proxy name. If you write it online – it will be found and blocked for all. Be a little smart about such things.
No positive news as of today about Facebook. Shit.
I guess it’ll even get worse with the google thing.
Or does anyone have an information on how long it will be blocked? Just like the wikipedia several years ago???
