Xinjiang. It is pretty bad there now. The local media and BBS’s has some pretty shocking video coming through. I guess the authorities are trying to stop things spiralling out of control. Easy to happen when a lot of poorly educated people get wind of misinformation and lack the capability to correctly vette, test or verify the information….and otherwise just “fly off the handle”…

I’m in Hangzhou and I haven’t been able to access facebook the whole day. I had to use a proxy server. Will this be permanent like youtube? I hope not!

I could get on during the day today – no problem… last I tried was at about 6:30pm… then a mate tweeted me at 7:28pm saying he just lost connection. He is in BJ too.

Maybe they are escalating the blockage based on regional area or risk factors based on local education levels or ethnic ratio’s?

I could survive without facebook.. twitter is what I need.

You should try and use friend feed and link facebook in and you can get some content that way. Though it can get complicated with all these social media networks linked and inter linked… it hurts my head and I am only in my 30′s. I guess I am too old for this stuff now. :-s

I’ve got a whole other family in Xinjiang too – they are freaked out. They are about 2 hours north of Urumqi and are mostly Han. Word has come through that other towns are now flaring up now too. Need to see if it is possible fly the babies and mothers back here to Beijing so the family can be together. My house is all on edge right now. The missus is going crazy with the mobile in one hand, and qq and other bbs’ and blogs in the other hand – coordinating info and news from among friends and family across the province and country.

  31. Jul10th2009
    31 Rich Jul 10th, 2009 at 9:37 PM

I’ve lost contact with a lot of friends. Close family, of course, I still have contact with through email and phone, but I’d developed a lot of friendships from Facebook. Being a foreigner in China makes it a little difficult to make friends sometimes.

Hopefully China gets this sorted out quickly. I also hope it gets sorted out properly. I’ve just talked to a few Chinese friends about what the disputes are about, and although it’s way out of control… well, that’s all I’m going to say.

Anyways, I’ll be going home soon, so I’ll be FBing it up as soon as I return to my jolly old home.

Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter blocked in Hong Kong. (Using Powercom.com.hk ISP)

  33. Jul13th2009
    33 richard Jul 13th, 2009 at 12:53 PM

For real? Can you confirm in a few other places or ISP’s or another PC/LAPTOP in your LAN to make sure it is not just a you problem?

  34. Jul13th2009
    34 Poor Jul 13th, 2009 at 10:37 PM

    richard,

I tried another apartment using the same ISP in the building and it’s still down. Facebook was up for a while during the day.

I can’t try another ISP but I doubt the whole of Hong Kong is blocked. Some HK friends were still active on Facebook when I managed to get on.

I could get thru to Facebook with a proxy randomly chosen by proxy.org.

  35. Jul13th2009
    35 Poor Jul 13th, 2009 at 11:47 PM

Facebook was up for a few hours then down again. I tried another apartment with the same ISP and things were down. Then later in the night Facebook and Twitter were available in the other apartment. So I went home and reset the modem and router and now everything is back again.

  40. Jul16th2009
    40 Joey Jul 16th, 2009 at 3:56 PM

    I’m done with sarcasm.

China is not great. China is a big playpen for 1.3 billion children. Children who have been taught to always do as they are told. And if they don’t do this, it CLEARLY means that they are bad Chinese, and don’t love the ‘motherland’.

Well…. to be honest, although all this pisses me off immensely, I am also happy on a daily basis that I am not Chinese.

And in theory, I can leave whenever I want.

If I were Chinese, I would be ashamed.

And I would do something about it.

  41. Jul17th2009
    41 richard Jul 17th, 2009 at 6:50 PM

Yup – not much fun….I hope this is all done with by the end of the month…. or failing that – the end of the year? :-s

Then again – there are bigger problems in life. Maybe we should all do some real social networking – like in person – with others – outside – away from the computer?

  42. Jul18th2009
    42 kyra Jul 18th, 2009 at 1:15 AM

    43 Elmur Fud Jul 18th, 2009 at 3:16 AM

Dudes, so much bitching and no action. Instead of waiting or wasting energy on things I cannot change I have full access and control of all the above mentioned sites which I I use within China. Took me a bit of google searching and the links to the information had to be accessed using a proxy, but now I have as normal connection using what seems to be a well kept secret. I’m not going to spoil it but the information id all there. I have a large expat friend list and not one of them has posted since it went down.

I think DNS poisoning might be on the right track. But really I don’t know about such things.

When I do a nslookup from my machine for http://www.facebook.com I get:

    202.106.1.2 and 202.181.7.85

    The site http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php gives me:

    69.63.184.142

Similar results for Youtube and Twitter. I wonder if this is DNS poisoning or just location based load balancing.

Facebook, Youtube and Twitter all seem to go down at the same time. They’ve been up and down for the past week.

As previously mentioned I am in Hong Kong.

  45. Jul18th2009
    45 richard Jul 18th, 2009 at 6:54 PM

Could be CDN or Global Load Balancing stuff for sure.. you’d really need a clean “reference” sample from before to compare to now to see if there is DNS poisoning going on….

  46. Jul18th2009
    46 Joey Jul 18th, 2009 at 7:30 PM

well Elmer Fudd, maybe you would be so good as to let me know how you achieved this… as the normal methods don’t seem to be working for me.

  58. Jul27th2009
    58 richard Jul 27th, 2009 at 10:26 AM

That’s why I don’t like to mention them online – as then they get attention drawn to them and they get nixed. It is the same strategy from back in the dormitories at uni when the college wanted to charge students for the LAN because the university was now charging the college. People would find proxies at various research schools but would not share because then the secret would be out from loose lips or the proxy admin would notice a big spike in traffic….. “Tragedy of the Commons”

I am using both Tor and Freeonlineproxy to access Facebook, and that works fine. One thing that does not work at all, anywhere, is Pet Society, it keeps saying to update my Flash Player and enable Java, but it already is, and I am also running the latest version.
Does anyone know how to get over this problem? Is it impossible to run Flash based pages like that using Tor etc?

    Thanks

I don’t know what’s causing it but the DNS entries keep getting clobbered. Sometimes a ipconfig /flushdns fixes it, or rest of the router/modem. But for example here twitter and facebook have the same IP address:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>ipconfig /flushdns

    Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

Try using the existing ones with SSL if they allow it – that will encapsulate the traffic. Also I have found that firefox works better than safari or IE with some of these web based proxies….. I am so over facebook now – just needed a reason to dump it. Long live twitter!

  72. Dec8th2009
    72 lagrande Dec 8th, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Yup it’s true, proxy websites no longer work. I’ve shifted to using ##### and it works really well in bypassing the great firewall of China, it gets me to access blocked social networking websites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, etc.

EDIT: I commented out the proxy name. If you write it online – it will be found and blocked for all. Be a little smart about such things.

Or does anyone have an information on how long it will be blocked? Just like the wikipedia several years ago???
